How to Make a Good Impression

Who impresses you?

Allow an image of this person to form in your mind. (Actually do it before you continue.)

What is it about them that impresses you?

Let three of four adjectives form.

___

If you’re like me you’re probably not impressed by empty words and fast-talking hype. I’m guessing you did not pick Sam Bankman-Fried.

Whatever impressed you, I’m going to bet that this person has something akin to heft, gravity, or weight. This may come across in their persistence, their self belief, or their ability to pick themselves back up. Heft allowed them to keep going until they became leaders in their field.

If you want to impress someone, to literally make an impression on them, you need to have weight. Otherwise, you will not leave a mark.

Imagine one boxer who floats up on tiptoes and another planted into the ground and imagine the punch that each can deliver.

Well, here’s the punchline: To develop heft, you need to ground.

You need to connect to your wider nervous system—not just your thoughts or ego-consciousness.

When you connect to your self deeply, you gain access to your robust biological reality, you become a force of nature.

People who are in their heads and disconnected from themselves are flimsy and reactive. They crumple easily. They suffer from imposter syndrome. They have no window of tolerance.

People who have their full nervous system switched on, have an emotional and spiritual core that allows them to absorb blows and come back to a regulated state. They are like a punching bag that keeps swinging back. They can stay in the game. They are less reactive and have more options.

This gives them presence or gravitas that other people can sense in them.

They pack a punch. They make an impression.

I’m curious, who impresses you? Perhaps it is something else about them. Please let me know by using the link below.
